Beberapa waktu lalu, saya sempat menyampaikan beberapa patah kata dalam acara menyongsong hari ulang tahun jurusan saya. Kala itu, dalam mata kuliah Speech, kami diharuskan menampilkan "speech" atau pidato dalam bahasa Inggris. Saya belajar menuliskan naskah pidatonya sendiri dengan beberapa penelaahan dari sumber-sumber yang relevan. Naskah pidato berikut berisikan tentang gagasan dan pandangan saya mengenai pendidikan tinggi di kampus tercinta. Semoga bermanfaat! :D

The Pursuit of Quality in an Imperfect World: A Speech about Reaching Quality in Higher Education at English Department of UIN Ar-Raniry

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah Wabarakatuh!

All praises be to Allah. Lord of the world, the king of the king, the beneficent and merciful. Him only we worship and him only we ask for help. We can attend here because of His mercy and bless.

Peace and salutation be upon to our prophet Muhammad SAW. Who has brought us from the darkness to the lightness, from Jahiliyah to Islamiyah. We do not forget to send our thanks to his friends and household who were helped him to spread this religion, till we can breathe in Islamic atmosphere.

Well, Mr. Chairman, Judges, my friends, ladies and gentlemen: It is a great honor for me to be here today. Thank you for this wonderful welcome. I would like to talk to you about a subject that is at the heart of the education — the pursuit of quality in an imperfect world.

Education and leadership have played a role in this world. It has begin from our childhood that taught by many things to be a good generation in the future and live in the society.

Before I go any further, I want to share you my views of several years ago. When I was in senior high, I was wondering if I can enroll to this department caused of its potential and role around our society. Then when I just graduate from my senior high, I come to Banda Aceh and found many students chosen this major. I really glad and think how lucky I am to be a student of this major right now instead of many of my friends did not enough space to be accepted here. Only the qualified person accepted here: you and I my fellow friends.

As we know, this major has own vision to produce the high qualified and excellence students when they graduate. Beside Islamic curriculum, it also provide special aspect to teach English language and able to communicate with the entire people of English speaking country; to teach and teachable.

The other mission is to educate senior high school’s graduates to be good scholars from English department and could have the following qualifications: the first is faithful and cautious to Allah SWT, have high commitment to serve the society. The second is having good performance to apply what they have studied at class. The third is ready to fight individually and develop their performance to continue their study or to get jobs and could be able to give the contribution to the society.

Although we have had success in development and celebrated some notable academic achievements this past year, the reality is that we face some significant challenges ahead. We must ask ourselves how we can meet those challenges and continue to achieve excellence. It is on this broad platform of excellence and on a vision of exciting new opportunities that English department should plan a future that maximizes its potential.

How can we fulfill our dreams of this department?

First, I believe that our faculty will continue to display a pioneering spirit and an entrepreneurial character that have characterized IAIN Ar-Raniry from its beginning.

Second, the leadership of the institution will need both wisdom and foresight as we shape a vision for TEN departments.

Third, there is the remarkable dedication and loyalty of our alumni and friends. Simply put, much of TEN's success in the past 10 years has been enabled by generous alumni and friends who have made critical investments in this university. For example, our KBA chief, Mr. Qismullah, is graduated from this department. It is also the other potentials alumni around this country and world who take part to the society and service.

This has been a challenging year, and there will be more difficulties ahead. But I hope you realize that with every decision we make today, we are investing in tomorrow. Personally, I am very optimistic about the future of this university and department. Our faculty, staff and students are incredibly talented, resourceful and deeply committed to the excellence of IAIN Ar-Raniry, especially to this department. The leadership within the schools and departments exemplifies the pioneering spirit that has served us so well. And our alumni are a tremendous resource. I am confident that we will meet the challenge and ensure the university's continued leadership in teaching.

As closing, let’s pray for our succeeding in the future: future of excellence of English Department.
